Rob has undertaken general and commercial management roles in a range of industries including telecommunications, computer software development and food and packaging manufacturing. Some companies that Rob managed over a 20 year period were developing and growing, while others were in a decline and rationalisation phase. He adapted to challenging situations and, consulting with line management, methodically analysed options and determined a course of action to achieve agreed objectives. His financial background, combined with many years of company management, sees him bring an experienced and analytical approach to business situations that achieve optimum results.
After completing a cadetship with BHP and holding several management positions in Melbourne and Indonesia, Rob entered the dairy manufacturing industry in 1979 as Managing Director of PT Indomik in Jakarta. During this period, several new products were launched into the Indonesian market, resulting in significant growth in sales and profit.
On returning to Melbourne in 1981, Rob became General Manager of Asia Dairy Industries, where he oversaw projects such as establishing a joint venture ice cream manufacturing company in Hong Kong and investigating international opportunities. Rob achieved the sale of the 50 per cent shareholding in the Indonesian factory over several years of extensive negotiations with government departments, partners and banks while working to resolve legal action in Australia and Indonesia.
In 1987 Rob joined Lomah Corporation as General Manager Development, where he chose the most appropriate action for several business segments and reviewed expansion opportunities. This included becoming Managing Director of a confectionary manufacturing company that was eventually sold to a competitor.
Rob joined Smorgon Fibre Containers in 1988 as Commercial Manager Victoria, where he oversaw three Melbourne cardboard box manufacturing plants. In 1990 he joined Catsco Pty Ltd as Commercial Manager. The company manufactured a range of telecommunications hardware and software products and developed a range of computer products. It was sold to TransMit Pty Ltd in 1992 and Rob became Managing Director. The company launched several software packages in 1993 that became market-leading telecommunications products.
Rob became sole owner of TransMit in 1998 and the company operated profitably until 2001, when it was sold to an American company wanting an Australian base. Since then, Rob has helped many clients to improve and expand their businesses by assessing the market potential of the product or service, defining problems and barriers to success, developing solutions and setting a clear direction for the owner. He has mentored in industries including food manufacturing, newsagents, tourism and hospitality, landscaping, retail, entertainment, internet marketing, software design, event management, water sports and plant nurseries.
