One of the most crucial elements of running a successful business is to have a business plan. It does not have to be "War and Peace", but does need to identify the business's direction and provide a plan to achieve the goals outlined.
Typically, small business operators either do not have a plan or have shelved it somewhere to gather dust after it has served its purpose of getting a loan or appeasing a bank manager. This approach forgets the plan's intrinsic value. The plan should be a living document, updated regularly and provide a roadmap of where you are going.
